I saw on here tha Basset Puppies are for sale - that is so exciting!
I was looking up that breed of dog and think it may be good for my family. However, for us, since I'm not a stay at home mom, I don't want to bring in a puppy. I want a grown dog and am even willing to take an older dog that needs a good hme. I am willing to wait for the right moment too.
I found a Basset Hound resuce in Knoxville and applied yesterday. I found a cute 6 year old male on there who is used to a family; his family just dropped him off one day because they were making a big move and coudln't take him. Soooo sad. I would love to take on a dog like this.
We have a fenced in yard, nic a big, two cats who are used to babies and dogs (because they have to be lol!) They are declawed. I have room, and can afford it. I just really want a dog to mesh with out family and what we can provide. We both work, but the dog wouldn't be left for more than 7 hours each day.
Anyone with experience with this kind of dog - would this be a good thing? I realize the health issues with a basset and that the are a sniffing dog. Input would be FAB!

Hey uma,
years ago with my ex we owned a basset hound. And seriously they are the most stubborn dogs ive ever met in my life. I wonever own one again so i cant recommned them. BUt thats just my experience. We tried training the dog and it jus t was not happening.
Now since that part of my life is over thankfully my husband and i before we were married decided we would get a puppy.we got a black lab.
I love him he is awesome and they catch on so quickly. He loves to shake hands oyu just hold your hand out and say shake and he shakes.
Labs are known for chewing things up i do not recommend getting a puppy you need an adult if you were to get this breed.
Pedro (my lab) chewed our floor at our old house, my shoes he had a thing for shoes. Anywho he grew out of it and was a wonderful protective dog he slept at the foot of our bed while i was pregnant but later in my pregnancy we had to put him outside i didnt want to but it was my husbands decision he didnt want a dog in the house with a baby we were new parents so i understand. So we put him outside on an electric fence it worked great.
Sadly now we are going to have to look soon for a smaller place to save us some money to buy a house we cannot save any money and catch up on bills paying what we are paying now. And no one will take an outside dog for osme reason they only want small dogs or no pets at all. we have had to miss some great places.
We rescued pedro from the pound as pound puppy
so taking him back to the pound is not an option.
But rescuing a dog is best howver before you get one i would test and see how timid he is like while he/she is eating reach down at his food bowl and if he growls its a no go.
i hope you find the doggie your looking for i know it will have a great home!

We have a Basset and I agree with PP they are stubborn, but they are the sweetest dogs. She is 7 years old and I have to say that her stubborness has gone way down from what it used to be. She listens ALOT better now, in the last 2 years, than she ever has. So maybe if you get an older one it won't be as stubborn. My dog however house trained really quickly and never has accidents. The one good thing about them too is they are lazy and not very high maintenace. I can't stand a hyper dog so she fits in so well with our family. She is really good with my 23 month old too. I hope you find the right dog for you and I think it is awesome that you are going to adopt one that needs a home.

i don't know much about basset hounds except i've heard their really lazy. we had a american bull dog alot of people think that their mean and all but this dog was just a big baby. she was so easy to train and loved kids. but unfortunately she got very sick and nothing could be done for her she died. I said no more animals cause you get so attached to it and then something happens. we do however have the occasional fish but for some reason they keep dying. we had a gerbil and that crazy thing was a mess we couldn't put him a cage with tunnels and everything he chew right through them. so we got a wire cage and all he do was throw shavings all over the place luckily we found him a good home to go to. hope you find the dog thats right for you and your family.

I really want a lazy dog! hahaha! I absolutely want an adult one, too. I don't really like puppies (is it bad to say that?! haha!) because they are seriously as hard a newborn IMO, unless you have a lot of hands helping. I want one that is over 2 years old, for sure. I hope we can find that perfect fit!

The only thing I would advise is to do a trial run and see how this dog does with your kids and cats. My dog is a sweet, loving dog but we had no idea she hated cats. It's made life very stressful for us. So, especially with your cats having no claws and no way to lay down their "law" I would just do a trial run first. The shelter will take it back if the chemistry isn't there. Good luck! Dogs are a wonderful addition to the family if they fit well.
